Punjab University (PU) has decided to establish a medical and dental college and to up-gradate present Health Centre into a Teaching Hospital at a cost of Rs 450 million. It was decided in a meeting held with vice-chancellor, Arshad Mahmood in the chair, here on Wednesday.

The meeting discussed various matters pertaining to infrastructure, financial resources, organisational structure and teaching faculty of the medical college and teaching hospital.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Farasat Ali Syed said on the occasion that hospital with 500-bed capacity would be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 450 million. He said establishment of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, forensic medicine and community medicine departments is pre-requisite for the setting up of a medical college. While medicine, surgery, paediatric, gynaecology, ENT, Eye, orthopaedic, psychiatry and dermatology faculties are required for the establishment of a teaching and nursing hospital, he added.

Principal King Edward Medical College and Dean Faculty of Medicine Professor Dr Mumtaz Hassan, Assistant Dean Professor Dr Syed Muhammad Awais, Registrar Masud-ul-Haq and others attended the meeting.
